Canyon Lake:

The Canyon Lake area includes a number of small, unincorporated communities including Sattler, Startsville, Canyon City, Cranes Mill, and Hancock. Canyon Lake is located about 20 miles from New Braunfels and about 40 miles from of Downtown San Antonio.

Canyon Lake History:

Not long after Prince Carl of Solms established New Braunfels in 1845, a a small group of pioneers began to settle up and down the Guadalupe River Valley to the north. One was a man named John Hancock who was granted land on the north side of the river in 1851. Another was James B. Crain, who built a mill at the Gum Spring crossing in the early 1850's.

Fast-forward to 1958 when the Army Corps of Engineers began work on a dam about 12 miles northwest of New Braunfels. This project created a new town, called Canyon City. The dam was completed and impoundment of water began in 1964. The lake filled 8,240 acres by 1968, and the old towns of Crane’s Mill and Hancock were submerged.

Activities & Attractions:

Once here in the Canyon Lake area, we recommend a map! Both the Canyon Lake and New Braunfels Visitor Centers offer free maps and lots of information and material on events in the area. Highlights include Dry Comal Creek Vineyards for some fun wine tasting, the Heritage Museum of the Texas Hill County Whitewater Ampitheatre (a live music ampitheatre on the Guadalupe River which hold lots of great music events), and for all you golf lovers, you'll want to visit Lakeside Golf Club. Then there is Canyon Gorge where you can take part in a guided tour, hike nature trails, and swim at the beaches where you can picnic and cool down during the summer. If you need more to do, try the boat rentals and paddling trail on the Upper Guadalupe River. Rainbow trout fishing below Canyon Dam is especially popular during winter and spring months for all those who love fishing.
