New Braunfels History:
New Braunfels was founded on March 21, 1845 when Nicolaus Zink, under the leadership of Prince Carl of Solms-Braunfels, led a German immigrant wagon train up the Guadalupe River. Zink's command arrived at the site that was to become New Braunfels on the east bank of Comal Creek. Once here, Zink platted town and farm lots and supervised construction in an area to protect the immigrants against alleged cannibalistic Indians. Prince Solms prepared a more permanent fort and headquarters for the immigrant association, the Sophienburg. By summer of 1845, the settlers numbered around 400 and the community had been incorporated under the name of Prince Solms' estate on the Lahn River in Western Germany, Braunfels. By 1850, New Braunfels was the fourth largest city in Texas.
